[Moscow]: ACADEMIA, 1934. 49, [2] p., ill. 43x29 cm. Publisher's illustrated binding.The edges and corners of the binding are worn. The back cover is slightly scuffed. One tracing paper is lacking a piece in the corner. Otherwise good.

The frontispiece and color varnished illustrations, title page, headpieces, and tailpieces are the work of Ivan Ivanovich Golikov (1886-1937), a Russian and Soviet miniaturist, Honored Artist of the RSFSR, and initiator and founder of the Palekh Artel of Ancient Painting. In 1922, in A.A. Glazunov's Moscow workshop, he completed his first papier-mâché works, laying the foundations for Soviet Palekh miniature painting and defining its fundamental features. The pinnacle of his work are considered to be the miniatures created in 1932-1933 for the gift edition of The Tale of Igor's Campaign, published in 1934 by ACADEMIA.

ACADEMIA was one of the best publishers of USSR in 1920-1930s. The editorial board has been assembled by the best liberators and scholars in the country, headed by Maxim Gorky. Most of the prominent artists at the time, including Favorsky, Filonov, Lissitzky etc. worked for the Publishing house over the years. In 1937 it was closed due to censorship issues.

Slovo o polku is a literary monument of Ancient Rus' that tells of the unsuccessful campaign of the Russian princes led by Igor Svyatoslavich of Novgorod-Seversky against the Polovtsians in 1185. It’s considered one of the best examples of medieval Russian poetry.
