Striking Soviet-era promotional poster issued for the Moscow performances of the Dance Theatre of Harlem during its 1988 tour, one of the notable cultural exchanges between the United States and the USSR in the late Cold War period. The company’s visit to Moscow, widely covered in the international press, was received with considerable enthusiasm and formed part of a broader program of artistic diplomacy, bringing an African American ballet troupe to Soviet audiences and contributing to cross-cultural dialogue in the performing arts.

The poster was designed by Vitaly Evgenievich Volf (b. 1930s), a Soviet graphic artist, illustrator, and poster designer, active in Moscow and a member of the Union of Artists of the USSR (MOSKh) since 1967. Educated at the Moscow Secondary Art School (1946–1953) and later at the V. I. Surikov Moscow State Art Institute (1959 - 1963) under B. A. Dekhterev, Volf worked extensively in applied graphics, producing posters and designs for institutions such as Reklamfilm, Goskontsert, and Eksportfilm, as well as for major publishing houses including Iskusstvo, Meditsina, and Mir. From the 1960s onward, he regularly participated in All-Union and international exhibitions of poster art, and his works are today held in major museum collections, including the State Central Museum of Cinema and the Bakhrushin State Central Theater Museum.
