Issued to promote the exhibition "Tabu-Erotika / Tabu- Erotic Art," held at the Central House of Artists (Krymsky Val 10/14, Moscow) from 16 March to 16 April 1995. Organized by the German & Russian Art Association, the exhibition formed part of the unprecedented wave of artistic openness that followed the collapse of the Soviet Union, when subjects long suppressed by official Soviet cultural policy—including eroticism, sexuality, and the European avant-garde—were publicly exhibited and discussed for the first time.
The poster reproduces an erotic composition by the celebrated German illustrator Thomas Theodor Heine (1867–1948), signed T. Ungerer in the image, depicting a playful interpretation of the Beauty and the Beast motif. The bilingual Russian-English title reflects the international character of the exhibition and its intention to introduce Russian audiences to Western traditions of erotic graphic art, a genre that had remained largely inaccessible during the Soviet period.
