Rare provincial edition of a study of children’s emotional development by the dean and lecturer in child psychopathology and medical pedagogy at the Medical-Pedagogical Faculty of Kyiv University Fishel Zalmanovich Shneerson (1887–1958). Written within the early Soviet tradition of medical pedagogy and child psychopathology, the book proposes new methods for examining the fantasies and emotions of both “normal” and “abnormal” children.

Shneerson’s approach was influenced by the psychological and neurological theories associated with Vladimir Bekhterev and applied methods of observation and interpretation to the emotional upbringing of the child. Rather than considering fantasy merely as imaginative play, he treated it as material through which the researcher could investigate the child’s fears, desires, attachments, conflicts, and responses to the surrounding world.

Especially interesting is the seventh chapter, which is based on fantasies narrated by children themselves, recorded by him and his colleagues in 1910s. Shneerson’s only other book was O vliianii katastroficheskikh sobytii na nervno-psikhicheskuiu organizatsiiu rebenka [On the Influence of Catastrophic Events on the Neuropsychological Organization of the Child], published in Kyiv in 1919.

A rare Gomel imprint and an early contribution to Soviet child psychology, notable for its use of children’s own fantasies as material for the investigation of emotional development.
