A spring 1986 issue of the popular Soviet seasonal fashion brochure Moda [i.e. Fashion], featuring thirty colorful patterns for fashionable women’s attire. The brochure formed part of a periodical series issued from the early 1970s through the early 1990s by the state publishing house Reklama in Kyiv, in cooperation with the Kyiv Republican House of Models. Several issues appeared annually, with these softcover booklets serving as accessible style guides and practical home-sewing manuals at a time when fashionable factory-made clothing remained in limited supply.

The issue features thirty patterns representing a wide range of women’s wardrobe categories, including youth jumpsuits, sport-style ensembles, straight and drop-waist dresses, sailor-collared sets, tailored outerwear, and plus-size apparel. Each model is presented with full-color fashion artwork accompanied by flat technical diagrams, fabric-consumption guides, and credits for the pattern constructors. The patterns reflect the transitional fashion climate of the Perestroika era, combining characteristic late-Soviet design with Western-influenced trends of the mid-1980s, from broad shoulders and cinched waistlines to utility and sportswear detailing. The designs were created by leading Ukrainian fashion designers associated with the Republican House of Models, including L. Boiko, M. Shlokova, I. Semenenko, and N. Zakharchenko. The color palette is dominated by rich rust red, sage green, forest teal, ochre yellow, and contrasting geometric trims.

The issue is supplemented with a specialized pattern insert sheet containing metric schematics intended for direct transfer onto a home sewing grid.

Overall, an appealing glimpse into the tastes, silhouettes, and everyday fashion culture of Soviet women in the mid-1980s.
