A catalogue of the VIII Exhibition of Graphic Arts by Russian and Foreign Artists, organized at the Lemercier Gallery in Moscow in October 1917. The exhibition, held at the height of the Russian Revolution, was one of the last to be showcased at the venue, which was shut down just weeks later.
The exhibition was sponsored by Paul Ettinger (1866–1948), a Polish-born, Moscow-based Russian art collector, historian, and critic. From 1904 to 1922, Ettinger served as the Moscow correspondent for the London journal “The Studio” and was an active member of the Moscow Society of Artists, frequently organizing local art exhibitions.
The VIII Exhibition of Graphic Arts featured 293 works by numerous Russian and international artists, including Ignatiy Nivinsky, Alexander Kravchenko, Elizaveta Kruglikova, Vasiliy Vatagin, Fyodor Zakharov, Nikolay Sheverdyaev, Vladimir Sokolov, Pavel Pavlinov, Nikolay Roerich, Auguste-Louis Lepère, Félix Bracquemond, and Auguste Raffet. Exhibitions like this, showcasing both Russian and foreign artists, became extremely rare after the establishment of the Soviet Union.
The catalogue is divided into two sections and includes a list of the 293 exhibits by Russian and foreign artists. Each entry lists the title of the work, and in some cases, the medium used.
Overall, an extremely rare catalogue of one of the last exhibitions organized in the final days of the Russian Empire.
