The first book-length survey of Ugro-Russian, or Rusyn, theatrical life in Transcarpathia. Nedzel’sky states that no comparable history had previously been attempted. Although the principal focus is on the development of Rusyn-language theatre during the 1920s and 1930s, the book also records theatrical activity in the region before the First World War, including the amateur companies that preceded the establishment of a professional stage.
Particular attention is given to the first professional Ugro-Russian National Theatre in Uzhgorod, founded in 1936. The present volume was published by a group of patrons and friends of the theatre to commemorate its fifth anniversary, shortly before its activities were interrupted in 1941. Alongside the professional company, Nedzel’sky documents the extensive amateur theatrical movement that had played an important role in Rusyn cultural life before the creation of the permanent theatre.
The volume contains 56 illustrations, including photographs of actors and theatrical companies, scenes from performances, stage decorations, and other material documenting productions and personalities of the Transcarpathian stage.
Evgenii Leopoldovich Nedzel’sky (1894–1961) was a literary scholar, folklorist, translator, poet, and historian whose work was closely connected with the culture and literature of Transcarpathia. Ugro-Russkii teatr is particularly valuable as a contemporary record of the region’s theatrical culture at the end of the interwar period.

Worldcat shows three copies at Columbia University, NYPL and University of Illinois.
