Item #2908

Kyiv: Derzhavna sluzhba heodezii, kartohrafii ta kadastru; Derzhavne naukovo-vyrobnyche pidpryiemstvo “Kartohrafiia”; Ukrainskyi instytut natsionalnoi pamiati, 2010. Scale 1:1,500,000. 65.5×95.5
cm [25 3/4×37 5/8 in.]. One of 3,000 copies. Slight wear to the cover; otherwise in very good condition.

The first substantial standalone cartographic publication devoted to the Holodomor. The main map records documented sites of mass death from starvation, memorials erected before and after 1990, and settlements placed on the Soviet “black boards”, which were subjected to administrative and commercial blockade.

Two inset maps provide additional statistical and political context. “Mortality from the Holodomor, 1932–1933” (scale 1:5,500,000) compares mortality with 1927 levels, showing increases ranging from approximately five to fourteen times. “Peasant Uprisings, 1930” (scale 1:6,500,000) marks locations of major rural disturbances.
The reverse contains extensive explanatory text and illustrations, including contemporary photographs and images of later memorials to the victims.
The project was headed by the Ukrainian cartographer Rostyslav Sossa. According to Sossa, the idea arose after a Ukrainian delegation of cartographers visited the Armenian Genocide memorial in Yerevan and saw a booklet containing a map of the genocide. A smaller Holodomor map was subsequently included in the National Atlas of Ukraine in 2008; the present large-format version was completed two years later.
The map was presented by its publishers in 2010 as the first professional, extensive standalone cartographic treatment of the Holodomor, combining demographic, documentary, memorial, and political-geographical evidence on a single sheet.
