The anthology includes popular melodies which form the basis of the repertoire of jazz musicians. All the topics included in the publication are arranged in chronological order and are assembled into four sections corresponding to the stages of the birth and development of jazz in USSR and abroad. Essays, prefixed to each of the sections of the book, contain historical references, theoretical notes on the styles of jazz and the characteristics of the performance interpretation. The sections are The Origins of Jazz, Traditional jazz and swing period, Modern jazz, Soviet jazz - the smallest part of all.
