First edition was printed by letterpress technique which didn’t allow to show all possible variations of fonts. For this edition lithography was used.
This edition includes introduction on calligraphy, general instructions for building lettering and frames in drawings and designs, writing in italics, calligraphic writing, typefaces. All these texts accompanied by illustrations of the correct way of sitting while writing and how to hold a pen and place a sheet of paper, types of ink pens, calligraphic elements, different fonts (supplied with footnotes on technical details). Only one last page is dedicated to motifs of frames but every page comes with a frame of different kind. Most of frames resemble art nouveau style. All this diversity of shapes was gone only few years later.
