First and only edition. Photomontage design of the book by Sergei Sen’kin. Very rare, especially in such condition.
The classic example of the photo-book created by one of the pioneers of the Soviet photomontage, Malevich’s student and Klutsis’ right hand, Sergei Sen’kin (1894-1963). Sen’kin has been an important link between suprematism and constructivism: he has worked with Malevich and Lissitsky in Vitebsk and was a member of UNOVIS in 1921, but by 1923 he has became one of the active members of the Left Front of Arts in Moscow, collaborating with Rodchenko, Mayakovsky and Stepanova. All of this time he has worked with Gustav Klutsis, creating posters and book designs together. Although traditionally the early development of photomontage in USSR is attributed to Klutsis, Sen’kin’s role should not be underestimated. After 1921 he has fully dedicated himself to the industrial and applied design, apart from the books creating posters, stamps, together with El Lissitskiy designing the Soviet pavilion on the Cologne exhibition of 1928.
This book marks an important landmark of the use of photomontage in Soviet book. Sen’kin has excelled at the genre of book-chronicle, imitating the short news segments as shown in the cinemas. The photos and videos of Lenin were very limited, so the artists had to use the same ones over and over again, but with photomontage it was easier to create the illustion of the variety of the visual range. The silhouette of the begone Lenin on the front wrapper resembles the digital noise, the concept, not yet known in 1930. All in all the book gives the impression of the short thriller allowing the reader quickly to dive into the incident leaving the strong impression.
The publication tells the story of Fanni Kaplan’s attempt to assassinate Lenin in 1918.
